How We Research
Every guide on Caravantasia starts with one question: will this gear work for the person who is shopping for it? For camping gear, that means how many people are going, how long the trip is and how much set-up you want to deal with.
Here is how we answer it.
1. We start with your trip
A weekend at a drive-up campsite and a week with the grandkids call for different gear. A tent that suits two adults can be a poor fit for a family of five.
We note the group size, the season and the space you have in the car. When your trip limits the choice, we say what to look for.
2. We compare specs and features
For chairs, we check seat width, seat height, weight rating and packed size. For tents, we look at floor size, peak height, rainfly coverage and set-up method.
For tent cots, we check frame size, weight rating and what's in the box. For camp toilets, we check tank size, seat height and how the tank detaches.
Makers describe their products in their own words, so we name the brand for every claim. We also note the warranty terms a maker lists.
3. We look at buyer feedback
We read through what buyers report after using a product. We look for patterns, like seams that leak, frames that wobble, zippers that jam or tanks that drip.
One angry review doesn't sink a product. A pattern does.
4. We score each product
Our score weighs specs, features and buyer feedback against what you're shopping for. A product that's great for one reader may score lower in a guide written for another.
Scores spread out on purpose. A 10 is rare.
5. We keep pages up to date
Products change, and some disappear from stores. Makers sell the same tent or chair in several sizes and colors, so we check the model and size before we link it, and we only link new units.
We skip unknown brands with no track record and any product with a known recall. When we update a guide, the "Updated on" date at the top changes with it.
What our picks are not
Our picks are research, not lab tests. We don't claim to have used every product we cover.
Weight ratings are limits set by the maker, not promises. Follow the manual that comes with your gear, and keep hands clear of fold joints on chairs and cots.
We don't give advice on health conditions. If you have pain or mobility concerns, talk with your doctor before you choose gear.
